A Message from the Superintendent

Nancy S. Grasmick, Maryland State Superintendent of Schools

I’m delighted to welcome you to Maryland and its top–ranked schools. More than 850,000 students are enrolled in Maryland’s 1,430 public schools. However, with all childcare and early learning services consolidated at the state department of education—a move that eases young children’s transition into school—Maryland actually serves more than 1 million children and their families every year.

From preschool through high school, Maryland’s high standards and strong academic support are producing students primed for the 21st Century’s remarkable opportunities. In fact, examining key education and employment indicators, Education Week said that children in Maryland have the nation’s fifth–best shot at adult success.

For the fourth consecutive year, students in all 24 school systems have improved their scores on the state’s reading and math assessments, and Maryland remains a national leader in the rigorous Advanced Placement (AP) program. The state is #1 in AP participation—the number of students taking an exam has jumped 80% in just five years—and #2 in AP performance. It’s achievement like this that last year earned students $500 million in college scholarships, and that led the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education to rank Maryland among the U.S.’s top seven states in preparing students for college.

Plus, Maryland is investing heavily in preparing students for high–skill, high–wage jobs in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) sectors—the very jobs that BRAC is generating. Enrollment in challenging, multi-year programs drawing on the STEM disciplines—pre-engineering, aerospace engineering, biomedical sciences, homeland security—continues its rapid growth.

With a public education system that’s consistently ranked among the nation’s best, Maryland is graduating students who are prepared, competitive, and fulfilled. I’m delighted that you and your children will be a part of the great things happening in Maryland’s public schools.
