A Message from the Colonel
Colonel Kenneth O. McCreedy, Installation Commander, Ft. MeadeI’m pleased to bring you greetings from the Fort George G. Meade community. Our installation is celebrating its 90th Anniversary this year. Established in 1917 as an induction center for draftees and a training installation to prepare the doughboys for the battlefields of France, Fort Meade has played many roles over the years. It has been the home of the Tank Corps with George Patton and a young Dwight Eisenhower learning their skills and building their friendship here. It has housed infantry regiments, tank brigades, armored cavalry regiments, Nike-Hercules air defense brigades, combat support hospitals, and military police brigades at various times. Fort Meade has been the headquarters of both the First and Second Armies.
Today, Fort Meade is the preeminent center for information and intelligence. The growth associated with BRAC will only build our capabilities in these areas, adding the Defense Information Systems Agency, the Consolidated Adjudication Facilities, and the Defense Media Agency to organizations currently residing on post such as the National Security Agency, the 70th Intelligence Wing, the Naval Information Operations Command-Maryland, and the 704th and 902nd Military Intelligence Brigades. With over 35,000 people coming to work through our gates today, we will be growing our work force to over 40,000 in the next few years. The expansion of opportunity outside the gate will be equally dramatic.
We are happy to welcome each of you to the vibrant Baltimore-Washington Corridor and look forward to enfolding you into our extended family on Fort Meade! This is truly a great place to live, work, and play!
